My Favorite Convertible: The Chrysler Sebring
Spring is when my mind turns to thinking about my favorite convertible: the Chrysler Sebring. When the air is full of that aroma of flowers blooming and freshly mown grass, I am dreaming about driving. Not just driving in any old car, but top down cruising with the stereo playing and the wind whistling by.
That is a picture I can see clearly in Springtime. It works for Fall too. As a matter of fact that car was fun to drive in all seasons.
The Chrysler Sebring convertible began as a 1996 model car. It had nice smooth lines, a comfortable interior and lots of options available.
As it progressed through the later 1990's the car became even more desirable with option packages that included the shift- it -yourself automatic transmission and power everything. The shifter gave the driver a sports car like feeling but without a clutch to make driving in heavy and slow traffic uncomfortable.
The interiors came in a jazzy two tone leather option that had multi-adjustable power seats. You could get that backrest just right and make the seat fit almost anyone.
The top went down in a flash with the touch of one button. Just unlatch the front two latches from inside the car, and the top folds smoothly into the back. It is equally easy to put it back up. I enjoyed this when a light rain would come up, you could pull over and put the top up and be back on your way in a minute or two.
With the top up the car is not as quiet as a sedan, but not very noisy for a soft-top. The wind noise was minimal and both air conditioner and heater would keep the car very comfortable in any weather.
Handling is tight and makes the Sebring Convertible fun to drive. It is no BMW, but then again it never cost anywhere near what the bimmer can cost either.
A great thing about this car is that it will seat 4 adults comfortably, and maybe 5 adults in a pinch. There just aren't many convertibles in this size, which is not too big and not too small. It has a great trunk and can carry all sorts of equipment for an outdoors enthusiast, and even has a flip down little back seat door to slide skis through.
My first experience with a Chrysler Sebring Convertible was as a rental car in San Diego, CA. Gorgeous scenery with fantastic weather and a cruising machine with the top down, made this a time I will never forget. The smooth highways by the blue Pacific Ocean, and the marina in the downtown area, made this just one great trip.
The special memories made better by my favorite convertible; the Chrysler Sebring.
